About

The KwaDukuza Diwali Committee was formed in 1995, to celebrate Diwali, one of the most significant and auspicious days on the Hindu calendar. This Committee since inception has made a positive contribution towards upliftment in our community.

This community offers an opportunity for people of different religious and cultural persuasions, different races and diverse personal interests to come together with a common goal, that is to promote and sustain our culture through the Diwali Celebration.

Raising funds for the celebration is a great challenge for the committee. The committee has taken a pro-active stance as a vital moment of reflection and forward planning. The celebration of the existance of a cultural body even for a mere five years is indeed a memorable occasion. Those early pioneers who unselfishly gave their services for the promotion and growth of the Diwali Celebration in Lower Tugela did not realise that the committee they were initiating would eventually grow to be a forefront cultural organisation and a symbol empowerment in our community.

This community stared off with a few friends who diced to get together on Diwali Day to share their picnic baskets and fireworks. This tradition and friendship led to a meeting where the possibility of a function for the public was discussed. Ideas at this stage centered around just a function for the locals. This community grew in stature and membership to such an extent that it now brings people of different religions and religious groups together at a national level.

For the committee to function effectively, guidelines were entrenched in a constitution. Sub-committees were formed to oversee the effective functioning of the committee. Members sacrifice their family life, finances and their workplace to fulfil the goals and objectives of the committee. Invitations have been extended to members of religious and cultural bodies as well as the community to become actively involved in the planning of this grand celebration.
